Another Azathioprine question!!! Options

Am currently doing a bit of "googling" on this treatment, as my rheummy is considering starting me on this whilst we're TTC.
I know that some of the information on the internet is not always accurate and consequently scaryScared !!! But I have noticed on a few articles a increased risk of certain cancers in patients taking this drug.
Anybody know anything about this or spoken to their Rheummy about it when offered this treatment?

Hi Claire,

I can clearly remember raising this with my rheumy when i was 16 and from what I recall it was something about not being in the sun for too long, that there was a TINY risk if skin cancer...but it is teeny..

Like all meds, they do come with their risks but RA needs to be controlled. Az. dosages are worked our according to one's body weight. So you need to be weighed first.

hi

azothyaprin and MTX plus a couple of other drugs can make you burn more easily in the sun so you need extra protection, perhaps the raised risk of skin cancer is related to this?

Hi Claire

My aunt took Azathioprine for quite a long while years ago. In the past few years she has developed small areas of skin cancer. She has never sat in the sun!!!!. The skin specialist said it was caused by Azathioprine. She has now been treated for the skin cancer and luckily it has been successful.

All these drugs cause side effects, it's very difficult to know what to take but you have to remember we all react differently. Best of luck.
